It's a nuisance I didn't want to have to deal with. Whether it will ever bother you probably depends on what you want to accomplish with Twitter.

There are a bunch of applications created by other people that you could use to manage your Twitter account. You could do things like find people who hadn't tweeted in a long time and unfollow them all at once, or you could find people who weren't following you back and unfollow them all at once (or many at once). Twitter insisted that everyone who wrote these applications remove the ability to unfollow a bunch of people at once. You have to do it one at a time.

That's OK if you only have a few people to unfollow, but if you have a lot, and you have to manually unfollow every single person, it's very time-consuming. It's also very hard on your wrists and fingers, if you suffer from a repetitive stress injury the way I do. I can't afford to beat my hands up that way, and I can't spare the time either.

I was interested in getting a large group of readers and writers, but I only wanted to follow a few people who weren't following me back. Someone who isn't following me back probably isn't interested in what I have to say, so I ought to pay attention to the people who are interested.

Everything I do that might help me get readers for my writing -- like blogging or following a social network -- takes a chunk out of my writing time, so I have to make judicious use of them. Twitter had advantages and disadvantages compared to a place like Facebook. I figured the advantages outweighed the disadvantages, until they started insisting on manual unfollowing. Now it looks to me as if I'd be better off paying more attention to my much-neglected Facebook account. (I'll see if I can reconnect with some of the people I'm going to miss on Facebook.)

I don't know if I'll do anything about Facebook right away. I didn't manage to write this weekend, and I'm eager to get back to The Winds of Winter as soon as possible.

I also have another major project I haven't been talking about much, here or on Twitter. I'm trying to get a new career started. I need to put most of my time and attention into that. I could make use of Twitter, but I can't afford to waste time on it, and that's what they were insisting that I do. Ah, well.

Hi,
I'm curious or confused rather about this post. I found your site because of twitter and it said you were following me and I went to follow you which led me here... Yes I see how this gets sticky... I only just got on Twitter myself at the beginning of February and I've gotten to really like it, but I don't know everything about it it. So, what is it exactly they have added or done now? Is this something I have to do or is this just a nuisance that you did not want to deal with? I'm not sure about the "unfollowing" part. I'm not following, LOL. Thanks.
I do however hope that we can connect on some of the reading/writing stuff we may both be interested in.
Take care,
Shauna

Sorry, I hate to ask this but do you have any recommendation on stopping spam? My sites have been getting hammered recently and I'm not quite positive how to stop it.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.
